21:34 But some in the crowd shouted one thing, and others something else, ¹  and when the commanding officer ²  was unable ³  to find out the truth ⁴  because of the disturbance, ⁵  he ordered Paul ⁶  to be brought into the barracks. ⁷

22:24 the commanding officer ⁸  ordered Paul ⁹  to be brought back into the barracks. ¹⁰  He told them ¹¹  to interrogate Paul ¹²  by beating him with a lash ¹³  so that he could find out the reason the crowd ¹⁴  was shouting at Paul ¹⁵  in this way.

The lashing would be done with a whip of leather thongs with pieces of metal or bone attached to the ends.
